Dangerous Goods shipping information

MDS Battery ship a wide range of batteries. Many of these are regarded as Dangerous Goods and shipping restrictions and special packaging requirements exist for them. If you are onward shipping any items purchased from us, you must comply with these regulations. MDS Battery can help advise you of the best options available for delivering your batteries in a safe and legal manner.

Shipping by Royal Mail

Royal Mail are unable to transport lithium batteries of any type sent on their own. The only exception exists where the battery is fitted into a device, or shipped with a device. Further restrictions exist if items are sent abroad by post.
Lead acid batteries that conform to Special Provision A67 may be shipped singly as long as the weight is less than 1.5Kg.
The datasheet below gives the exact rules.

Shipping by courier service

Courier companies often have additional company rules as well as having to observe both road and air transport regulations.

Shipping by air freight

The rules for shipping batteries by air are getting increasingly complex. The flowchart on the 2016 guidance is a good starting point, but in general, there are now severe restrictions on the shipping of lithium products by air.

IATA Lithium Battery Guidance 9th March 2016.
This sets out all the major rules for shipping Lithium batteries of any type by aircraft. Includes easy to use flowchart.

ICAO 30% State of charge rules for Li-ion batteries shipped by aircraft.
Regulation that effectively enforces a low state of charge in all Li-ion batteries shipped on aircraft.

ICAO Lithium Batteries as Cargo 2016 Update III.
This effectively bans the shipping of Lithium batteries on passenger aircraft.

IATA Special Provision A67.
Working paper setting out rules for lead acid batteries to meet Special Provision A67. Most lead acid batteries sold by MDS Battery meet Special Provision A67. All those manufactured by CSB Battery, the Yuasa NP series and the Cyclon products all conform, and are exempt from most shipping restrictions.
