Are there any special instructions for very cold weather use?
Shorai tell us that their Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries will start your bike normally in temperatures down to -7C (you are braver than me if you ride your bike at those temperatures!). I have had a Shorai battery in my Diavel for over a year and it starts every time whatever the weather.
The Shorai Lithium Battery range
When it's cold the people at Shorai make a simple recommendation to get the best from your battery. These batteries need to be 'warm' internally to deliver their best performance when starting an engine. That's not to say that you need to feel that they are warm to the touch - it's more to do with the way the chemistry works internally.
Shorai suggest that it's a good idea to allow some current to be drawn from the battery before cranking the motor. If the temperature is down to about 5C then let the bike sit with the headlight on for 30 second before you start it. It doesn't take much but this just helps to ‘wake’ the battery and will give a stronger start. If it doesn't go 'first pull' then the second will be that much stronger as some current has been drawn.
In reality these batteries will start your bike or car in any temperature down to about -17C but at those temperatures it's recommended that you should leave the lights on for several minutes.
