What should I use to charge my Shorai Lithium Iron Phosphate battery?
By far the best way to charge your Shorai battery is to use Shorai's own
or either of the
CTEK Lithium XS
Optimate Lithium 0.8A
These chargers are designed specifically for this type of lithium battery which is often referred to as Lithium Iron Phosphate or LiFePO4. This is the preferred Lithium chemistry for motorcycle and car starter batteries and shouldn't be confused with any of the other 'Lithium' batteries out there.
Get the best from your cutting edge lightweight Shorai Lithium battery by using the correct charger. Don't destroy it with some old charger that you find in the shed!
Can I use my Lead Acid bike battery charger?
You can use a good quality Lead Acid staged maintenance charger but NOT if it has a ‘Desulphation’ mode.
This will definitely damage the Shorai battery because most desulphation cycles produce high energy 'pulses' that are very bad for Lithium Iron batteries.
If in doubt give us a call to check whether your charger is suitable.
Make sure that you disconnect the battery charger once your Shorai battery is fully charge as the maintenance mode will not work with Lithium Iron batteries.
The table below shows how much capacity remains at a given voltage. This is a resting voltage with no load and ideally disconnected completely. Our recommendation is that you recharge the battery when the voltage reading drops close to 13.1V.
