The company was founded in Tokyo just after the end of the Second World War by Masuru Ibuka and built Japan's first ever tape recorder - the Type G. In the early 1950's Ibuka and his new partner Akio Morita liscensed the transistor technology from Bell Labs in the USA and made the first commercially viable transistor radio. Today Sony is one of the largest multinational organisations with combined revuews of exceeding US$88.7 billion in 2008.
