Compaq is a relative newcomer to the world of computing compared to IBM and Toshiba having been founded in 1982. The name derives from the phrase "Compatibility and Quality". Today the brand is owned by Hewlett Packard which markets a wide range of consumer electronic products.

You could say that Compaq started the laptop industry with the launch of its Compaq Portable in 1983 at a cost of £2995. However, they were not all that portable!
